Guide Right is our National Service Initiative and includes all our youth-oriented programs. However, the Flagship Initiative of the Guide Right Service Program is the Kappa Leadership Development League (Kappa League). Guide Right is a program of educational and occupational guidance of youth, primarily inspirational and informative in character. The purpose of the Guide Right Service Program is to place the training, experience, and interest of successful men at the disposal of youth. We focus on developing leadership, creating an achievement mindset, and mentoring. We have mentored over 500,000 young people.
Conceived in 1922 by Leon W. Stewart, and suggested at the twelfth Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi®, Guide Right became the fraternity’s national service program.. Leon Steward is the founder of the National Guide Right movement of Kappa Alpha Psi® Fraternity, Inc. and Past Western Province Polemarch. Soon after the St. Louis Alumni Chapter’s beginning in 1921, Leon W. Steward and J. Jerome Peters were assigned to research possible programs that would assist in developing the youth of the Black community and to devise a “meaningful and practical approach” to the problem of Black youth underachievement.
Ultimately, Brother Steward, proposed a program of guidance to be designated as Guide Right, with the purpose of assisting high school seniors to choose and pursue useful careers. The focus of Guide Right, from its inception, was to provide scholarships to needy and talented students, and to inform young people of the professions and other career options.
On Saturday May 11, 2024 the Wilmington (DE) Alumni Chapter sponsored the Samuel Brown Fellowship Breakfast. The Samuel Brown Fellowship Breakfast is an annual event named in recognition of Brother Samuel E. Brown, a lifelong educator who has made significant contributions to the Wilmington Alumni Chapter’s Guide Right program. The event is an opportunity for the brothers of the Wilmington Alumni Chapter to meet and interact with the young men in the chapter’s Guide Right program. During the breakfast the young men are paired up with brothers who will serve as mentors and career/educational resources.
In attendance were 24 brothers of the Wilmington Alumni Chapter and 24 young men in the Guide Right program. The keynote speaker for the event was Brother Daniel Nixon, the Undergraduate & University Affairs Coordinator at Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. International Headquarters (IHQ).
Realizing that little honor was being given to our local young African American males, the Wilmington Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated decided to jointly sponsor a program in collaboration with the Wilmington Delaware Chapter of The Links, Incorporated to better this situation.
In 1987, the Wilmington Delaware Achievers Program was founded upon the vision that with proper guidance, groups of exceptional and dedicated young men could be bonded together in pride and commitment. That vision became reality and today the program continues to play a crucial role in the development of many young African American males in our community. Participants in the program are young men ages 16 to 19 who are referred by their schools, churches, community organizations, families and friends. This vital program is designed to develop self-awareness, confidence, sense of responsibility and encourage excellence in young African American boys and men.
About The Achievers Program, Inc.
The underlying program theme, “Promoting Excellence in African American Young Men”, reflects the overall purpose and goals of the program, which are to provide a comprehensive, enriching experience for African American male youth that will assist them in developing:
To accomplish the program goals and objectives, a series of workshops and activities are provided over several weeks. Participants are encouraged to recognize the value of higher education and to set and pursue goals leading to higher educational achievements. A significant component of the program is the opportunity for the Achievers to meet and work with many local role models who encourage them to develop skills necessary for successful living and strengthen qualities that reflect responsible manhood.
The culminating event – “The Affair of Honor” – is a formal banquet and ceremony, at which time the young men are “presented” to the community and receive recognition and other awards because of their participation in the Achievers Program. This is indeed a significant and memorable event in the life of each young man, who during the ceremony, pledges his commitment to a life of finer manhood. The amazingly impactful Achievers Program continues to make a difference in the lives of Delaware’s African American young men and boys.
